What is Humanism?

The short and punchy answer is,

“The rejection of religion in favour of the advancement of humanity by its own efforts.”

 – Collins Concise Dictionary

But roughly speaking, I think a humanist is someone who:

  • trusts science when it comes to understanding how the universe works and doesn’t believe in the idea of a supernatural or higher power
  • makes ethical decisions based on reason, empathy and with concern for human beings and the planet
  • believes that we only have one life and that we have the responsibility to give shape and meaning to that life whilst helping others to do the same.

But that’s just what I think. If you want to find out more about humanism have a wee shoofty at;
